The Summer Palace is within Bejing. It was built as a ploy by one of the emperor's concubines, serving as a virtual prison (if you count being walled in with 1500 concubines "prison") for the emperor's legitimate heir, so that her son could inherit the throne instead. She got the money by embezzling it -- it was to have funded the navy -- after the emperor's wife died. This view is from the inside of the entrance.
