In botany, a bract is a modified or specialized leaf, from the axil of which a flower or flower stalk arises; or a bract may be any leaf associated with an inflorescence. Usually bracts are green and resemble the other leaves. However, some bracts are brightly colored and serve the function of attracting pollinators, either in concert with or instead of the tepals. An excellent example of this latter type of bract occurs in the Poinsettia plant. In a general sense, tepals are elements of the perianth, or outer part, of a flower, such as petals or sepals. The term tepal is usually used when all segments of the perianth are of similar shape and color, or undifferentiated. When different types of organ can be distinguished, they are referred to as petals and sepals. A sepal is a part of the flower of angiosperms or flower plants. Sepals in a "typical" flower are green and lie under the more conspicuous petals. As a collective unit the sepals are called the calyx of a flower. The perianth is made up of the calyx, which is the outer part of the flower made up of sepals and the inner part of the perianth (called the corolla) which is made up of petals. The petals and sepals are usually differentiated into colorful petals and green sepals. But many flowers have colorful sepals and lack petals or the sepals and petals look similar and are often called tepals. The term tepal is usually applied when the petals and sepals are not differentiated and look similar or the petals are absent and the sepals are colorful. When the flower is in bud, the sepals enclose and protect the more delicate floral parts within. Morphologically they are modified leaves. JAlbum 7.0
