Inside Jackson Square, named for the city's hero of the Battle of New Orleans (fought after the war had ended, but the combatants hadn't heard), Andrew "Stonewall" Jackson. Back then, the square was privately owned and its gates were open only on Sunday. Now it is public and always open. Artists hang their works for sale on the wrought-iron fence.
